Hedge Cutting & Pruning

We cut and maintain hedges of all species and sizes across Thanet, privet, leylandii, laurel, box, beech, yew, hawthorn and mixed hedgerows. Whether it’s a small front garden hedge or a tall boundary screen, we have the right equipment and experience to get a clean, even result.

The right time to cut: For most hedges and hedgerows, February is ideal, before birds begin nesting. Fast-growing species like leylandii and privet will benefit from a second cut in late summer once nesting season has finished. We’ll advise on the right schedule for your hedge when we visit.

When Is the Best Time to Cut Hedges in Thanet?

For most hedges and hedgerows, February is the ideal time to carry out cutting and pruning work — and it’s the window we’d always recommend booking for if you can.

Here’s why. From around March onwards, birds begin nesting in hedges, shrubs and dense vegetation right across Thanet. Once nesting season is underway — which can run all the way through to August — disturbing hedges where birds are actively nesting isn’t just something to avoid out of consideration, it’s something you’re legally obliged to avoid under UK wildlife law.

Cutting in February gets ahead of all of that. The hedge gets done properly, the birds are undisturbed, and you go into spring with everything neat and under control.

For fast-growing species like leylandii and privet, a second cut later in the year — typically late summer, once nesting season has ended — keeps things looking tidy through the growing season. We’ll always advise on what’s right for your specific hedge.

The practical upshot: if you’ve been meaning to get your hedge sorted, don’t leave it until spring. Book in for February and it’s done before the season gets busy.

Ivy Management

Ivy isn’t automatically a problem, in fact in many situations it’s genuinely valuable and worth keeping. On solid, well-pointed brickwork it can insulate and protect a wall. As ground cover in shaded spots where grass won’t grow, it’s one of the best options going. And for garden wildlife, nesting birds, autumn bees, butterflies, it’s one of the most important plants in a UK garden.

The issues arise when ivy is left completely unchecked and starts getting into gutters, behind fascias, under roof tiles, or into already-damaged mortar and render. That’s when it needs attention. We’ll always give you an honest assessment of what’s worth keeping and what genuinely needs cutting back or removing.

We handle:

  • Cutting back ivy from gutters, rooflines and window frames
  • Trimming ivy on walls and fences to keep it at a manageable level
  • Removing ivy from render, timber and damaged masonry where needed
  • Managing ground cover ivy — trimming edges and keeping it contained
  • Clearing ivy from sheds and outbuildings

4

All cuttings, trimmings and waste are collected and removed. Path, garden or site left clean and tidy — nothing left on the pavement or in the flower beds.

Winter Tree Pruning And Getting Your Trees Ready for Spring

Winter is one of the best times to carry out tree pruning ,with the leaves down, the structure of a tree is fully visible, pruning wounds have time to heal before growth begins in spring, and the work can be done without disturbing the garden at its busiest.

  • Fruit tree pruning — apple, pear, plum and cherry trees all benefit from winter pruning to improve shape, remove dead wood and encourage better fruiting in spring and summer
  • Ornamental tree pruning — tidying shape, removing crossing or damaged branches, crown lifting to let more light into the garden
  • Storm damage — Thanet’s exposed coastal position means trees can take a battering in autumn and winter. We deal with damaged and hanging branches before they become a bigger problem
  • Trees overhanging roofs, fences or neighbouring properties — cut back safely and tidied up properly

In Thanet’s exposed coastal position, autumn and winter storms can leave trees with split, damaged or hanging branches that need dealing with promptly. It’s worth getting these sorted over winter rather than leaving them to become a bigger problem.

We’re generally easier to book for tree work during the winter months — if you’ve been putting off getting a tree looked at, autumn and winter is the time to do it.
